Brand Damage

At Second Shift Design, we help organizations enhance their brand. So we have some opinions on the many celebrity brands out there.

I’m tired of seeing Kim Kardashian’s weird frozen face and center-parted, cascading waves of hair that never change.

I feel like the world is gagging on Kardashian. Girlfriend is ERRYWHERE. I don’t think this is good for her brand. Because when your brand becomes “Oh, you again?” combined with a joke of a marriage, you will eventually and thankfully fade into the mist. But only time will tell…I suppose if people continue tuning in to watch her do nothing but flaunt her badonkadonk on her reality shows, we will be haunted by her forever.

Another starlet suffering from brand damage is poor little LiLo.

In my opinion Lindsay actually has talent. “Mean Girls” was undeniably excellent, and Lindsay was such a beautiful girl. Now she’s suffering from a bad, and I mean bad case of puffer fish face that has aged her about 150 years. It truly hurts me to look at her now. I hope she overcomes her troubles, stops making out with her mom, and ditches the bleached-out locks/plastic surgery. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should…perhaps that should be her next tattoo.

Now a celebrity with an excellent brand is the lovely Lauren Conrad. LC rose to fame on a stupid reality show about rich high schoolers, but she overcame her origins and has now positioned herself as an authority on fashion for young ladies who like to pretend they are as pretty as Lauren Conrad (hey, I know I do). She actually went to school to learn about it (wow!) and has her own lines. She’s not all up in your face like K squared. She’s also written some young adult novels, which makes me want to vom, because if Lauren Conrad can do it, why can’t I? Can I at least be her ghostwriter?

Another great brand is that of Zooey Deschanel.

I mean, who is not totally and completely in LOVE with the magical Zooey? She is beautiful, she can sing, she is quirky, she has an endearing retro style, she has giant blue eyes and adorable bangs…OK, fine, I will admit my girl crush on ZD. But that just shows the power of her brand…if she can get straight girls to fall in love with her, what CAN’T she do?

In conclusion, avoid overexposure and face-bloating plastic surgery and your brand should be in good shape.

2011 National Agri-Marketing Association Awards

We’re proud to announce that Dave Smoak of Second Shift Design received first place in the Southeast region of the 2011 National Agri-Marketing Association (NAMA) awards in the category of brochures. The winning entries, for AGCO Corporation’s RoGator and TerraGator application equipment, used computer-generated images with the assistance of Indigo Studios of Atlanta, Georgia allowing the machines to be placed in virtually any environment, crop, and time of day. Other team members included Chris Lund, marketing specialist for AGCO Application Equipment, and Tim Byrne, owner and copywriter for Main Street Management.

Second Shift receives their 5th Davey Award

We’re pleased to announce that our efforts on AGCO Corporation’s newest TerraGator brochure allowed us to take home our fifth Davey Award, thanks in part to the teamwork of Dave Smoak, Tim Byrne, and Chris Lund.

The Davey Award is an international creative award focused exclusively on honoring outstanding creative work from the best small firms worldwide. The 2010 Davey Awards received over 4,000 entries from ad agencies, interactive agencies, production firms, in-house creative professionals, graphic designers, design firms, and public relations firms.

David defeated the mighty Goliath with a big idea and a little rock. That is the sort of thing small firms do every day. The Davey Awards honors the achievement of the “Creative David’s” where strength comes from ideas, intelligence and out-of-the-box thinking, not a “Giant’s” bankroll. Great work is about fresh ideas and exceptional execution, not the biggest budgets.
